Written World is a tool for the cataloguing and creation of signs from around the world, aimed at celebrating, promoting, and better preserving their diversity. At the Escuela Superior de Diseño de Madrid, vernacular signs that mark public spaces in different cultures are considered a valuable cultural heritage. These signs are essential for defining and expressing the identity of a place, and they play a key role in the readability, livability, and enjoyment of public spaces. However, these distinctive city signs are disappearing rapidly, being replaced by global logos and homogenized signage, often made of low-quality plastic.

​The project emphasizes the need to protect this graphic heritage, which can serve as a foundation for research and creative processes. It also advocates for raising awareness of designers' responsibility in the design, maintenance, and quality of common spaces, encouraging design schools to prepare future professionals to contribute to the necessary changes in our environment.

​Since 2003, the school has been involved in various projects related to typography and public signage, and is now developing the Written World platform, which aims to be a useful tool for the cataloguing and collective valorization of this endangered heritage. The platform will feature an open database of the best signs from around the world and will serve as a shared space for experimentation and research into new meanings, forms, and materials for future signs.

As part of this effort, a tour of Madrid's Plaza Mayor was conducted to mark its 400th anniversary. The tour identifies typographies and old signs considered distinctive to the area, inviting others to explore and appreciate them.
